Chicago Metropolitan Area Evacuation Planning
Regional Transportation Simulation Tool for Evacuation Planning (RTSTEP) Final Report
Are you a Chicagoan?
Sick of long commutes?
Why don't you
try to depart 15 minutes
Earlier or Later than usual?
You may be able to
have a half hour Coffee Break before work
or
arrive at your destination almost same time as usual!
Interested?
Let's take a look at my research!
Chicago Congestion Mitigation Planning [Peak-Period Departure Time Shift]
More than 20 millions of Trips are made per day
in the Chicago Metropolitan Area
and
3 millions of Trips are made in the Chicago CBD area
From the Census 2010, it is estimated that
21 percent of those trips are for commuting, and
concentrated in the AM and PM peak period.
Yes
If we use TRANSIMS
(TRansportation ANalysis and SIMulation System)
using the High-Performance Computer.
There is NO limitation.
It can simulate millions of vehicles and travelers trips.
Possible to tracks millions of vehicles on a second by second basis
for 24 hours of the day.
powerful & Free
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has provided most of the funding for the development of TRANSIMS, so it is an open source software.
It depends on your departure time, and your trip origin and destination. Please, tell me more details of your commuting.
Oh, I see. Let's check simulation result to figure out the benefit of the 15 minutes late departure from 7:45 AM.
This is the map visualize the benefit of 15 minutes late departure toward the CBD area at 7:45 AM
For example, your place in fall under the value 1 area which means
If you "INVEST" 15 minutes, you will be able to get 15 minutes benefit.
In other words, if you leave 15 minutes late,
your travel time to Willis Tower will be reduced by 15 minutes.
For example, if you depart at 7:45 AM, you arrive at your workplace around 8:30 AM
Whereas, if you depart at 8:00 AM, you arrive at your workplace around 8:30~32 AM.
15 minutes late, saving 15 minutes of travel time!
You will be able to sleep 15 minutes and can arrive at your work on a similar time!
What a magic?
Congrats!
Unfortunately, no.
You want too much...
If you depart at 8:15AM, you can save only 8 minutes.
Another congestion due to the truck starts around that time.
No, it only applies to your place.
If your friend departs 15 minutes later than her usual departure time, 7:45 AM,
her travel time will be increased up to 25 percent.

It's a temporary introduction. More details will be updated after the end of the project
